Alphonse Mellot Génération XIX 2002 Loire, France
Alphonse Mellot isn't just the 19th generation of wine making Mellots, he's also the 19th of the dynasty to be called Alphonse. In addition, he's one of the stars of the Central Loire, producing Sauvignon Blancs that makes others look rather basic, as well as Pinot Noirs that would shame many a red Burgundy. Génération XIX isn't his top cuvée of white Sancerre (the barrel-fermented Edmod has that honour), but it is as fine an example as anyone could wish to find. It goes beyond the standard herb-and-grass-tinged citrus and gooseberry fruit to offer wonderful depth of flavour, a lively mineral tang, a crisp, nutty texture and both a fascinating and compelling finish.
